Spam in this scenario has nothing to do with the internet, except it’s our blog. Air Fryer Spam Fries are spam-e-licious!!!
Every morning while I am gettin ready for my day job, I listen to The Bob and Tom Show. They start my day with a laugh. This week they were talking about Spam and it brought back many a memory of my Grandma and of Spam.
When I was a kid my Grandma had Spam in her cupboard……always! She would fry it up for breakfast with eggs, or as a light dinner, or as a sandwich. My Grandma was not a fancy cook, but she made some pretty amazing and tasty dishes.
Now, I haven’t eaten Spam in a long, long time and quite frankly, other than what my Grandma did with it I didn’t know how to make it new again.
Pinterest….where you go when you want to…..fill in the blank. I searched Spam…..there is not much folks don’t do with it…..holy moley!!!!
I did see quite a few recipes for Spam fries….interesting. It’s still hot here in the midwest, after all it is still August, so the oven was out!!! Air Fryer IN!!!!!
Admittedly, I do not use my Air Fryer much. It’s a big unit, but the cooking space is small. It does have its applications though. Air Fryer Spam Fries being one of those times.
So ,where do you find Spam at the grocery store you might ask?? By the other canned meat, I ask another shopper as I mentioned I have not had Spam in years.
Spam in hand, home I went….just in time before I melted…..it’s toasty outside!
What exactly is Spam??? Not the mystery meat it has been purported to be……it contains 6 ingredients ……..I know I was shocked too!! Pork, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite(preservative).
Spam became popular during World War II, its fully cooked so can be eaten right from the can. During that time Spam was introduced to Pacific Island countries. The average person in those contours consume 16 can per year…….I don’t think Ive had 16 cans in my life….lol.
While Spam is not something to be eaten as part of a healthy dies, it does have a lot of sodium and fat, but the simple ingredients makes it a better choice than a hot dog (ok I’ll say it… lips n’ assholes). But as an indulgence….like Spam Fries, its perfect!!
As simple as the ingredients in Spam are, so is this recipe. Can of Spam, air fryer, cooking spray…..done.
Cut the Spam, I cut in thirds along the lowest side and then in fourths along the shorter side. Cut into the thickness you want, whether thicker or thinner (I may opt for thinner next time).
Heat up the air fryer (refer to your unit instructions). Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray, place the fries in the basket, and cook for about 15 minutes, or until your desired crispness. Done!!!
Break out the ketchup and settle back for a tasty treat!!
Side note…..if you are of certain age……. you will remember that Spam, back in the day, came with a key on top and you had to twist the key around the top of the can to open it. Let’s just say there were many an argument over whose turn it was to open the Spam can……lol I’m bummed the key is gone 🙁
